Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can help to strengthen tooth enamel and we frequently recommend fluoride applications to provide extra protection for your child’s teeth. This is applied in the form of a fluoride varnish containing bioavailable calcium and phosphate which helps to enhance tooth enamel resistance to acids that can cause tooth decay.

What is Fluoride Treatment?

Your dentists will provide professional fluoride treatments in the form of a gel or varnish. The treatment may be applied with a swab or brush. These treatments have much more fluoride than what’s in your water or toothpaste. They only take a few minutes to apply. You will be asked to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after the treatment so the fluoride can fully absorb.

Always give your dentist your full health history so they can choose the right treatments for you.

Fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that can help prevent tooth decay, slow it down, or stop it from getting worse. Fluoride varnish is made with fluoride, a mineral that can strengthen tooth enamel (outer coating on teeth).

Keep in mind that fluoride varnish treatments cannot completely prevent cavities. Fluoride varnish treatments can best help prevent decay when a child is also brushing using the right amount of toothpaste with fluoride, flossing regularly, getting regular dental care, and eating a healthy diet.

Is Fluoride Safe?

Fluoride is safe and used by dentists and doctors all over the world to help prevent tooth decay in children. Only a small amount is used, and hardly any fluoride is swallowed.

How is Fluoride Put on the Teeth?

Your dentist will apply the fluoride on to each tooth with a cotton swab or small brush. It does not hurt when the varnish is applied and only takes a moment to be applied.

You may be asked to hold your child in your lap while you are placed knee-to-knee with the person applying the varnish.
